Larimar

The stone of love

Since the end of the 20th century, the Dominican Republic has been supplying the world with this beautiful blue-coloured ace. In addition to the official name, it is also known as Haitian turquoise, Atlantis (legend has it that it comes from the lost Atlantis), dolphin stone. In the Dominican Republic, the poetic name of larimar is the stone of love. The indigenous people, believing that the stone originated from the sea, called it the "blue stone".

Although the locals have long used the stone, and there was an initiative to exploit it as early as 1916, it was only officially 'discovered' for the jewellery industry in 1974.

The discovery of the semi-precious stone is attributed to the jeweller Miguel Mendos from Santo Domingo. The stone takes its commercial name from the jeweller's daughter Larisa, and its beautiful colour, which is reminiscent of the surface of the Caribbean Sea as it reflects the clouds.
